There’s Still Time to Get Ahead of the Next Global Pandemic
Public health is under pressure due to declining funding, exhausted professionals leaving the field, and increased urgency from outbreaks such as measles and dengue. The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the need for a more efficient and effective approach to controlling outbreaks, leading to a transformation in epidemiology. This transformation is adopting innovations such as mRNA vaccine platforms and at-home testing, but public health cannot rely solely on these biomedical countermeasures. Instead, the most promising development is the adoption of higher reliability principles as a new operational standard. These principles are derived from industries with zero tolerance for accidents and errors, such as space exploration and commercial aviation. Public health is beginning to reorient away from bespoke approaches to outbreak response towards structured processes characteristic of high-reliability industries. This commitment to continuous improvement, data- and metric-based monitoring of performance, and the implementation of standardized operating procedures are hallmarks of high reliability. These practices enable organizations to maintain safety and effectiveness, even during complex and high-stakes environments. The adoption of high-reliability principles is emerging as a promising solution for public health, leading to increased successful investigations in the investigation of foodborne illnesses. By embracing structured and continuously improving processes and cutting-edge technologies, public health will enhance its ability to identify and control disease outbreaks.
NASA solar probe survives dramatic plunge into the sun
The Parker Solar Probe has successfully completed its approach to the sun, breaking several records along the way. The probe was able to transmit a beacon signal, indicating that it is operational and in good health. NASA confirmed the mission’s success just after midnight on Christmas Eve, Dec. 27. The probe arrived within seven times closer than any other probe to the surface of the sun, protected by a large heat shield. The probe also broke several records during its approach, including becoming the fastest human-made object ever. The mission is not yet done, as the probe will send detailed telemetry data on its status on Jan. 1. The probe is equipped with instruments that can measure and image the solar wind, which is why scientists are hoping it will pass through one of Sun’s coronal mass ejections (CMEs) so they can gather further data on how a CME accelerates particles into space.
